Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons (15g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup (240ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)
- 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) red food coloring (gel preferred for vibrant color)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8 oz (227g) cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare the Dough In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour with sugar, yeast, salt, and cocoa powder. Whisk together until well blended. In a separate bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring constantly until a shaggy dough forms. Add remaining flour gradually, mixing until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Step 2: Knead and Rise Transfer your vibrant red dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic – it should bounce back when lightly pressed. Place the dough in a large greased bowl, turning once to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1-1½ hours, until doubled in size.
- Step 3: Create the Filling While the dough rises, prepare your filling. Beat softened butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla until light and fluffy. This creates a spreadable mixture to infuse every swirl of your Red Velvet Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Rolls.
- Step 4: Roll and Fill Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 16×12-inch rectangle. Spread the cinnamon filling evenly across the surface, leaving a 1/2-inch border along one long edge. Roll the dough tightly into a log, pinching the seam to seal.
- Step 5: Shape and Second Rise Cut the log into 12 equal rolls and arrange them in a greased baking pan. Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Step 6: Bake and Frost Bake your rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden. While they bake, prepare the cream cheese frosting. Allow the rolls to cool for 10 minutes before generously spreading with frosting. Serve warm for a delightful Valentine’s Day treat.
